The Asiatic Blood Tail Dragonfly

The asiatic blood tail (Lathrecista asiatica) dragonfly is widely distributed across South and Southeast Asia. This medium-sized dragonfly is particularly notable for the male's distinctive appearance, featuring a bright red abdomen that gives the species its common name. They are skilled aerial predators, feeding on smaller flying insects which they catch on the wing. During the breeding season, males can be observed patrolling their territories near water bodies, defending their space against other males while waiting for potential mates. I spotted it in Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary , Goa.
