The Himalayan vulture or Himalayan griffon vulture (Gyps himalayensis)is an Old World vulture native to the Himalayas and foothills in North and Northeastern India, as well as the adjacent Tibetan Plateau. It is one of the largest old world vultures. It has a massive wing span of 2.5 to 3.1 meters, and weighs from 8-12 kilograms. Typically found at elevations between 1200 to 4500 meters.
These magnificent birds play a crucial role in their mountain ecosystem by preventing the spread of diseases through their scavenging behaviour. Their population has faced challenges but they remain one of the more stable vulture species in the region. Listed as ‘Near Threatened’. I photographed it in Bengal Safari in Siliguri.
