Deepor Beel Wildlife Sanctuary, Assam

Deepor Beel Wildlife Sanctuary, also spelled, Dipor Bil, is a stunning freshwater lake and wetland ecosystem located in the southwestern edge of Guwahati, Assam. This permanent freshwater lake is a vital natural habitat for numerous species of birds, including many rare and endangered ones. The wetland, spanning approximately 40 square kilometres during floods and shrinking to about 10 square kilometres in the dry season, is one of the largest natural wetlands in the Brahmaputra Valley. The sanctuary is particularly renowned as a major site for migratory birds, hosting over 200 bird species, including several threatened waterfowl species.

I reached there on a wet foggy day; thus I was not very lucky with spotting lot of bird. The wetland is significantly used by the local communities, who have traditionally depended on it for fishing, fodder, and other resources. However, it is disturbing to see the way the space is abused and left littered and unattended causing various environmental challenges to wildlife, water, and people. There needs to be increased conservation efforts to protect this unique ecosystem.
