What is striking about imperial green pigeon is its size and its colour: it is the largest in its family, adults measuring to 38-47 centimeters; and it has feathers that shimmer with greenish bronze and copper hues in the sunlight, complemented by a soft grey head and a delicate pink blush around its neck.

I found them outside Kaziranga National Park, Assam, as I made my morning photography walk. I spotted these peaceful birds perched high in trees, their red eyes scanning the branches for ripe fruits. They move with a dignified air, unlike their hurried city cousins, taking their time to select the choicest fruits with their grey bills. Usually, they travel in pairs or small groups, though they sometimes gather in larger numbers when they discover an especially bountiful fruit tree.
