St. Francis Xavier's Final Resting Place

 The Basilica of Bom Jesus, Goa, holds the incorruptible body of St. Francis Xavier. This Spanish missionary, revered for spreading Christianity in parts of Asia. St. Francis Xavier died in 1552, but his story doesn't end there. Legend has it that his body remained miraculously well-preserved after his death. Embalmed with quicklime, it was transported long distances by sea with minimal signs of decay. This phenomenon solidified his reputation as an incorruptible saint, a testament to his holiness.

St. Francis Xavier's final resting place is a sight to behold. Tucked away within the southern transept of the Basilica lies the Saint Francis Xavier Chapel. This ornamented chamber has Baroque aesthetics, with swirling frescoes and marble paneling leading the eye towards a magnificent silver casket.

St. Francis Xavier's body, in that magnificent silver casket, is a potent symbol for devotees. Every ten years, a grand Exposition is held, where the remains are brought down and placed in the nearby cathedral for public veneration, which draws thousands from across the globe.
