The stately and interesting Sambar deer, or Rusa unicolor as it is scientifically known, is found in the thick woods and grasslands of South and Southeast Asia. The Sambar deer, one of the biggest species of deer, is tall and has noticeable antlers on its head. It has a strong, muscular frame. Its coat has a range of colours, from a deep, nearly black shade to a rich chestnut brown, which helps it blend in with the shadows of its forest home.

I captured them at Thekkady, in Periyar Tiger Reserve. It is a herbivorous creature, primarily feeding on a diet of grasses, leaves, fruits, and shrubs. In spite of its ecological importance, the Sambar deer faces numerous threats to its survival. Habitat loss due to deforestation, poaching for its meat and antlers, and human-wildlife conflict pose significant challenges to its populations.
