The Pied Kingfisher, Ceryle rudis, is an unusual black and white kingfisher found in many places including South Asia. They often are found near clear water bodies which are open areas like, lakes, rivers, streams, etc. that have trees and bushes to perch on. Overall, Pied Kingfishers are highly adaptable birds found in a variety of habitats, as long as there is suitable water for hunting and nesting. I photographed them while taking a ride on a bamboo basket boat on Kaveri river near Mysore.

They typically excavate their nests in earthen banks near water bodies. These nests are often long tunnels leading to a nesting chamber where they lay their eggs and raise their young.
